About M.D. Cyprus Soya Ltd

M.D. Cyprus Soya Ltd is a partnership between the Stavros Makris Group of Companies and Soya Hellas SA with a trading presence in animal feeds in Cyprus since 1987.

The Managing Director, Mr. Stavros Makris has a BSC & BCOM in Mechanical Engineering and Economics from Birmingham University. His work experience includes (1980 – 1984) working as a Project Engineer with Shell International Petroleum based in London in the small team in charge of the design of the Lub-Oil blending plants and construction worldwide, (1984 – 1986) with Commodities International Ltd in London and since 1987 with M.D. Cyprus Soya Ltd in Cyprus. A total of 10 employees are involved at the present time, with additional contract/temporary staff being used as necessary.

The company has been importing/ distributing traditionally in bulk materials, such as Soybean meal, Lucerne (alfalfa) meal pellets and Sunflower meal pellets, but also in bagged materials such as Fishmeal, MCP/DCP and Amino Acids usually shipped in 25/50-kilo bags in ISO containers. As of Cyprus’s entry into the EU (May 2004) the company has seen a tremendous expansion in its trading business, having the opportunity to be very active in imports of Feed Grains as well, which had been the exclusive domain of a government monopoly up to that point in time.

Imports now total about 110.000 mt per annum of all products valued at about €20M. This consists approximately of about 80.000 mts of Feed Grains and the balance mainly in SBM. The SBM is imported in lots of about 7.000 mt Hipro shipped as part cargo on large vessels from mainly Argentinean origin. Grains and other bulk products are shipped in 1500-6000 lots. (Complete cargoes mainly from EU and Black Sea origins.) Sometimes shipment of different bulk products is combined on the same vessel. Carrying vessels are P&I club covered, bulk carriers, geared on non-geared. Internationally accepted surveyors are appointed at loading to inspect the vessel holds before receipt of cargo and certify the quality and quantity of the products loaded. The final analysis of the products is usually carried out by First Class Labs in Holland.

On arrival, the vessels are discharged at Vassiliko or Larnaca ports, using either the company’s own grain unloading machine, or vessel gear/ Port Authority cranes and the company owned grabs and hoppers into third party trucks. Port stevedores, contract and own labourers/employees are used for the discharge. The trucks are weighed on the certified port scales and goods are delivered both directly to customers, as well as to company stores. The stores are located strategically near or inside the port areas. Our company has developed and already completed the first phase of its own terminal at Vassiliko port, at which the discharge and storage facilities are owned and operated independently by us. The stores are located just off the quayside. A silo complex is under planning for construction at the same site in Vassiliko port.

In between vessels, goods are delivered on a daily basis to the whole spectrum of Customers in Cyprus, ranging from the animal farmers with home mixing facilities, to compounding mills and smaller distributors.
